Handling multiple levels in agent-based models of complex socio-environmental systems: A comprehensive review

چکیده
Agent-based modeling (ABM) has been successfully used, since its emergence in the 1990s, to model and simulate dynamics at work complex socio-environmental systems, many domains applications where interactions between people their environments give rise emergent phenomena that are difficult study otherwise (urban planning, land-use change, adaptation environmental changes, biodiversity protection socio-ecosystems, pollution control, etc.). The inclusion of multiple levels analysis, abstraction, representation these models, however, is much more recent still subject proposals discussions within a relatively informal field, Multilevel Agent-Based Modeling (ML-ABM), which most often presented as an approach extends classical ABM paradigm include multilevel concepts. Over past decade, ML-ABM increasingly adopted explored by researchers effective for framing defining mechanisms underlying dynamics. However, due youth no single definition, methodology, or tool unifies studies this rapidly expanding area. This review will begin with introduction systems (SES) challenges approaches face representing them properly, especially regarding complexity human behaviors organizations. presents opportunities SESs respect challenges, including simulation individual social behavior ability provide descriptive generative simulated system. limited represent scales, concepts absent from metamodel. Time in discrete agent-based models of socio-economic systems
We formulate the problem of computing time in discrete dynamical agent-based models in the context of socio-economic modeling. For such formulation, we outline a simple solution. This requires minimal extensions of the original untimed model. The proposed solution relies on the notion of agent-specific schedules of action and on two modeling assumptions. These are fulfilled by most models of pr...
متن کاملLangevin Processes, Agent Models and Socio-economic Systems Agent Models
We review some approaches to the understanding of fluctuations in some models used to describe socio and economic systems. Our approach builds on the development of a simple Langevin equation that characterises stochastic processes. This provides a unifying approach that allows first a straightforward description of the early approaches of Bachelier. We generalise the approach to stochastic equ...

متن کاملPredicting Behavior in Agent-Based Models for Complex Systems
Many important real-world systems feature a population of interacting objects (e.g., financial markets, traffic). These systems often exhibit unexpected macroscopic behavior whose existence would have been hard to predict based solely on a knowledge of the microscopic properties of an individual (e.g., market crashes, traffic jams). Despite the lack of a universally accepted definition of compl...
متن کاملPosition Paper for Agent-Based Models of Complex Systems
Object-oriented process models, which include individual-based models (IBM) commonly used in ecology and agent-based models (ABM) common in the social sciences, allow for modeling both change and movement of geographic entities and have developed independently of GIS. The object-oriented framework of ABM involves identification of agents and of a temporal framework within which those agents per...
